The trio consisting of the Norwegian bass great Arild Andersen, the multi-faceted tenor saxophonist Tommy Smith and the energetic drummer Thomas Stronen is currently one of the most exciting formations of its kind. The qualities of the three exceptional musicians are particularly evident live, which is why the new CD “In-House Science” captures one of these outstanding concert evenings – it was recorded in September 2016 in the Villa Rothstein in Bad Ischl, Austria.

The qualities of these three exceptional musicians are particularly evident live, which is why the new CD ‘In-House Science’ captures one of these outstanding concert evenings – recorded in September 2016 at Villa Rothstein in Bad Ischl, Austria, with former drummer Paolo Vinaccia, who unfortunately passed away on 5 July 2019.
The album is the follow-up to the trio’s first live album, Live At Belleville, which was released exactly a decade ago and garnered rave reviews as well as a host of awards. ‘Absolutely and utterly fantastic,’ said BBC Music Magazine in the UK. And Jazzwise asked in amazement: ‘How often do three musicians create music as powerful and panoramic as this?’
“Music is always a question of space. And only a few can construct this as skilfully as Arild Andersen, Paolo Vinaccia and Tommy Smith. Now, with the live album In-House Science, the free sound architects have given renewed proof that they have an excellent sense of air and energy, of relationships and interactions, of the interplay between foundation and roof.” Jazzthetik
“In-House Science was recorded live at the PKS Villa Rothstein, Bad Ischl and complements in a gripping way the concert in Oslo “Live at Belleville”, which was already recorded a decade ago. In the meantime, the musical quality of the trio has been further refined, and there is no doubt that musical soulmates are at work here.” Fono Forum
“Great, how boundless the joy of playing is here, how excellently the trio with Andersen, the outstanding saxophonist Tommy Smith and the drummer Paolo Vinaccia have attuned themselves to each other. […] This is how jazz should be!!!” Concerto
