In the world of the jazz piano trio genre, crafting a truly personal sound is an art form in itself. With his debut recording, “Mer Tan Itev”, Armenian born Tigran Tatevosyan meets the challenge, and emerges as a sincere storyteller with a new, yet mature voice.
He moved to Hamburg in 2020, where he was accepted in Dr. Langner Jazz Master program at HfMT Hamburg where he had a chance to learn from such masters as Vladyslav Sendecki and Florian Weber.
He shared the stage with Bob Moses, Nils Landgren, China Moses and others.
Influenced by both the rich harmonic, rhythmic and melodic language of Armenian folk music and the contemporary energy of modern jazz, classically trained pianist Tigran Tatevosyan has spent years perfecting his own fusion of the two. On this journey, he has composed and mastered a collection of pieces that are brought to life on ‘Mer Tan Itev’ (2024).
The delicate equilibrium between soul and intellect is distinctive of Tigran’s music, where complexity gracefully supports simplicity. Tigran’s album ‘Mer Ten Itev’ offers a melodic and harmonic palette rich in emotions, intricate yet groovy rhythms. The musical sorcery immerses the listener in a musical world that defies classification.
Tigran Tatevosyan was born in a small town in Armenia, a country with a rich cultural tradition. He was introduced to the world of music at the age of six, when he started eight years of classical piano training at a Secondary Special Music School in Yerevan. From an early age on, he simultaneously developed a strong interest in improvised music. After completing his bachelor’s degree, he decided to make Jazz his artistic path, which for him meant leaving his home country in search for new opportunities to develop his musical skills.
Thus, in 2017, Tigran enrolled at the Rachmaninov Conservatory in Rostov, Russia, with the aim of a master’s degree in jazz piano. His musical exploration started with a study of Oscar Peterson’s work and then moved on through the music of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Lyle Mays, and Keith Jarrett. At the same time maintaining his interest in classical music, he also studied composers such as Debussy and Rachmaninoff.
The rich harmonic, rhythmic and melodic language of the folk music of his homeland always attracted Tigran, and over time, this inspiration in combination with his studies in western music began to shape his unique composing and performing style.
Still in search of new ways to perfect his art, he moved to Hamburg in 2020, where he was accepted in Dr. Langner Jazz Master program at HfMT Hamburg where he had a chance to learn from such masters as Vladyslav Sendecki and Florian Weber. He shared the stage with Bob Moses, Nils Landgren, China Moses and others.
In 2022, things started to come together for Tigran, as he was given the opportunity to record his debut album “Mer Tan Itev” with drummer Ziv Ravitz and bassist Giorgi Kiknadze at Fattoria Musica Studio (Osnabrück). The program features Tigran’s original compositions inspired by Armenian folk music and modern jazz, as well as arrangements of Armenian folk songs, and besides the Trio format includes solo performances as well.
The album was released by o-tone in 2024, and concerts have been taking place since autumn 2024, putting Tigran in the spotlight as a special artist with a genuine story to tell.
“virtuoso, refuses to be categorized, precise, elegant, intimate, a discovery.” hr2 Kultur
“In a spectrum between Armenian tradition, classical music and contemporary jazz, Tigran Tatevosyan is in the process of developing his own voice as a pianist. His album Mer Tan Itev is a promising start.” NDR Kultur
“He treats the original [“Brilliant Corners” by Thelonious Monk] with respect, using whole passages but modifying them in tempo and dynamics, even making them jump and dance for a brief moment. This refreshment suits the classic perfectly.” RONDO
“Mer Tan ltev is multi-layered, but never sounds forced, is pensive (’Forgotten City‘), playful (’The Wind’s Dance‘), innocent (’A Child’s Mind‘) and lively (’Blessing”), clearly classically influenced and yet never constrained by tradition.” Jazzthetik
“The trio is thoroughly playful, sounds elegant and beautiful when playing together, acts with a lot of soul and never puts virtuosity in the foreground. Instead, the three enchant with their melodies and rhythms. A more than worthwhile discovery.” JazzThing
